QuietCount – Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 30, 2026
QuietCount ("the extension") is a browser extension that counts the words and characters in text you select. This policy covers every version of it, including any release for another browser. Short version: it doesn't collect any data.
What the extension does with data
- Text you choose to count. When you click the QuietCount toolbar button, press its keyboard shortcut, or pick "Count words in selection" from the right-click menu, the extension reads the text you selected on that tab (only the selection, never the rest of the page) and counts it on your device. Text you type or paste into the popup is counted the same way. The text is never stored or sent anywhere.
- Password fields are never read.
- No storage. QuietCount saves nothing: no history, no settings, no identifiers. The last right-clicked selection is kept in memory for up to two minutes so the popup can show it, and is gone as soon as the browser stops the extension's background worker.
- No network. QuietCount never contacts any server. It has no analytics, no crash reporting, no ads, no affiliate links and no remote code.
- No access to your browsing. QuietCount has no permission to read the pages you visit or your browsing history. Its "activeTab" permission only lets it access the tab you're on, and only right after you click its button, press its shortcut or use its right-click menu item.
Permissions
- activeTab – access the current tab, only after you click the button, press the shortcut or use the right-click menu.
- scripting – run one small function in that tab to read the text you selected.
- contextMenus – add "Count words in selection" to the right-click menu.
Support link
The popup has an optional "Support" link to the developer's Buy Me a Coffee page. Nothing is sent when you open the popup; clicking the link simply opens buymeacoffee.com in a new tab, where that site's own privacy policy applies.
Sharing and selling
We don't collect data, so we don't sell, share or transfer any. Nothing is used for advertising, credit decisions or anything unrelated to counting the text you asked to count.
Children
QuietCount collects no personal information from anyone, including children.
Changes
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this address with a new "Last updated" date. Any future version that collects data would ask for your consent first.
